Workforce
The core mission of hospitals and health care systems is caring for people. To fulfill that mission, hospitals and health systems need compassionate, skilled, trained, and dedicated professionals. Health care is a labor-intensive field, requiring 24-hour-per-day/seven-days-per-week staffing to achieve optimal quality outcomes. Investment in a qualified and engaged multi-disciplinary workforce is foundational. To advance workforce issues, the AHA has developed a Workforce Agenda.

Active Shooter Incidents in Health Care Settings
Due to recent tragic events, Hospitals Against Violence has gathered for health care facilities a list of resources and tools that provide guidance on how to prepare and respond to an active shooter incident.
Advocacy Issue: SAVE Act
Hospitals, health systems and their staff support enactment of a federal law that would protect health care workers from violence and intimidation, just as current federal law protects airline and airport workers. Congress should enact the bipartisan Safety from Violence for Healthcare Employees (SAVE) Act (H.R. 2584/S. 2768), which provides protections similar to those for flight crews, flight attendants and airport workers.
Behavioral Health Workforce Issues
The need for a strong behavioral health care workforce is more important than ever. The AHA is working to strengthen this important area of health care and integrate it with primary care.

Advocacy Issue: Physician Workforce
Congress should take a number of actions to help hospitals and health systems support today’s workforce and ensure a future pipeline of professionals to meet the nation’s increasing demands for care.
Capacities: Workforce Supply, Planning and Advocacy
The U.S. will need to hire 2.3 million new health care workers by 2025. An aging population, a rise in chronic diseases and increased behavioral health conditions contribute to the need to strategically plan for a workforce that can meet the demands of today and tomorrow. As hospitals and health systems re-deploy providers in response to new care models, the AHA helps hospitals implement strategies for workforce planning, recruitment, retention and development that best serve the needs of the community.
